About the NLA
The
NLA is the first level of representation for all longboard surfers,
including members of the many longboard surfing clubs in NSW, who wish
to compete at regional, state and national levels. It is a
not-for-profit organisation run by a committee comprised of annually
selected longboarders from across the state.

Originally, the NSW Traditional Boardriders Inc. (NTB) was formed in 1997 for the benefit of all longboard surfers within NSW. The association's name changed and is now known as New South Wales Longboarding Association (NLA).
As a part of the Surfing Australia structure, NLA is responsible for the running of all events associated with the selection of longboard surfers, from all regions of NSW, into the team representing NSW in the Australian Longboard Titles - held annually at rotating state destinations.
Longboard surfing is an increasingly popular sport along the entire surfing coastline - not only of Australia, but throughout the surfing world. Because of its comparative ease of use over the short board, the longboard can be ridden by the very young and the very old. In fact, the most popular divisions in almost all longboard contests are the Over 50 and Over 55 groups - and there are competitors in the Over 60 division that are over 75 years of age! In recent years more women and junior events have been established to cater for the increasing number of entrants in these areas.
Another major benefit of the longboard's ease of use is the attraction of families into the sport - with entire families often represented at the local longboard club's monthly point-scores - held by most longboard clubs affiliated with the association.
All longboarding clubs within NSW are affiliated with NLA and are within "region" boundaries. The longboarders within each region participate in a regional contest to select that area's representatives in the appropriate divisions of the event. The divisions are typically representative of the Australian Title's divisions - which cover open and aged events for both sexes. The various regional teams participate in the State Titles, which are held over a 7 day period at a selected state venue, to determine the official state team and reserves for the Australian Titles.
The
NLA is responsible for the organisation and running of all events
leading up to and culminating in the state team selection. From there,
it is also responsible for the state Team through the Australian
Titles. Selected team members also represent NSW - in conjunction with
other states and Surfing Australia - in determining the future
direction and development of the sport within Australia .
Membership of NLA is just $55 per year. You must be a financial member of Surfing Australia to be entitled to compete at Regional, State and National level as well as some specialty events.
