Old Mals Smoke Em in Vico

(With thanks to Daffy Chisholm)

On February 14tth, after the most disastrous week in Victoria’s history, it was with the smell and sight of smoke that the 2009 Victorian Old Mal Titles got underway with a minutes silence at Ocean Grove.
The event was run by the SOUL Longboard Club, and an eerie red sunrise greeted competitors for check in at 6.30. The two classes of over and under 40’s were both full before the event, and it was great to see good support coming from other longboard clubs, including Surfcoast, Maladiction, other Victorian and interstate clubs.
First to hit the water were the over 40’s. Most of these competitors started their surfing careers on this type of board and the style and skill displayed in the small conditions showed they have lost none of their class.
The under 40’s was tightly contested, with surfers showing that a bit of youth and suppleness can be useful for manovering the old style boards.
SOUL President Brian Tucker said “that he could not have been happier with the way the day turned out - especially with George Rice and Wayne Lynch on hand to talk about the good old days. The club now looks forward to hosting next year’s event, possibly on an even bigger scale”.

All proceeds from the day were donated to the Victorian Bush Fire Appeal.
